After Exposure of an Impacted Tooth

Post-Op Instructions After Impacted Tooth Exposure

The exposure of an impacted tooth is a delicate surgical procedure. Proper post-operative care is essential to ensure optimal healing and avoid complications. Please carefully follow the instructions offered by our oral surgeon in Richardson, TX.

Do Not Disturb the Wound

If surgical packing was placed, leave it undisturbed. The packing helps keep the tooth exposed for proper healing. If the packing dislodges or falls out, there is no need to panic, but please contact our office for further instructions.

Bleeding

  • Slight bleeding or redness in the saliva is normal for up to 24 hours after surgery.
  • If excessive bleeding occurs, place a gauze pad directly over the wound and apply firm pressure for 30 minutes. If bleeding persists, contact our office for further instructions.

Swelling

Swelling is a common response following surgery and may last for several days. To minimize swelling:

  • Apply an ice pack or a bag filled with ice cubes on the cheek near the surgical area.
  • Continue applying ice as much as possible for the first 36 hours after surgery.

Diet

  • Stay hydrated and drink plenty of fluids.
  • Avoid hot beverages and solid foods immediately after surgery.
  • Stick to soft foods and liquids for the first day, and gradually return to your normal diet unless otherwise directed.

Pain Management

  • Begin taking pain medication as soon as you feel the local anesthetic wearing off.
  • For moderate pain, take Tylenol or Extra Strength Tylenol (1-2 tablets every 3-4 hours) or Ibuprofen (2-3 tablets of 200 mg over-the-counter strength every 4 hours, not exceeding 3200 mg in a day).
  • For severe pain, take prescribed medication as directed. Avoid operating machinery or driving if you are taking stronger prescription pain relievers.
  • If the pain persists or worsens over time, please contact our office.

Oral Hygiene

  • Good oral hygiene promotes faster healing. Starting the day after surgery, gently brush your teeth and rinse your mouth with warm salt water (1 teaspoon of salt in a cup of warm water) six times daily.
  • Ensure that you maintain a clean surgical site, as this promotes better healing.

Activity

  • Keep physical activities minimal immediately after surgery to avoid complications.
  • Engaging in physical exertion may lead to increased bleeding or throbbing at the site. If this happens, stop your activity immediately.
  • Be mindful that your reduced nourishment intake after surgery may cause weakness, so rest and hydrate as needed.

For any additional questions or concerns, or if complications arise, please don't hesitate to contact our office immediately.
