Multiple Extractions

Post-Operative Instructions After the Removal of Multiple Teeth

To promote healing and ensure a smooth recovery after the removal of multiple teeth, follow these detailed instructions.

Managing Bleeding

  • Some bleeding is normal following the procedure. If bleeding occurs, place a gauze pad over the socket and bite down firmly for 30 minutes.
  • If bleeding persists, switch to a moistened black tea bag and bite down for 30 minutes. The tannic acid in the tea can help clot formation.
  • Avoid hot liquids, exercise, and keep your head elevated to minimize bleeding.
  • Do not remove your immediate denture unless the bleeding is severe. Expect some light oozing around the sides of the denture.
  • If the bleeding doesn’t stop, contact our office immediately.

Swelling Management

  • Swelling is common and will reach its peak around the second day after surgery. To minimize swelling, apply ice packs to your cheek near the surgical area for the first 36 hours. Keep the ice on continuously while awake.
  • After 36 hours, switch to moist, warm towels to help reduce swelling and discoloration, especially if there is bruising around the eyes. Apply the towel as long as it is tolerable.

Pain Relief

  • For mild discomfort, take over-the-counter pain relievers such as aspirin, Tylenol, or ibuprofen (Advil or Motrin). Take 2-3 ibuprofen tablets every 3-4 hours, not exceeding the daily limit.
  • For severe pain, take the prescribed medication as directed. If your pain does not subside after two days or worsens, please call our office.
  • If you are prescribed antibiotics, finish the entire course unless you experience an allergic reaction.

Oral Hygiene

  • Avoid rinsing your mouth for the first 24 hours after surgery. Afterward, rinse gently with a warm saltwater solution (1 teaspoon of salt in 1 cup of warm water) every four hours and after meals to keep the surgical area clean.
  • Once your dentist adjusts your immediate dentures, remove them and rinse 3-4 times a day.

Diet

  • Stick to a liquid and soft food diet for the first few days. Gradually return to normal foods as you become more comfortable.
  • Drink plenty of fluids, especially on the day of surgery, to help replenish any lost blood and stay hydrated. Aim for at least six glasses of liquids on the first day.

Normal Post-Operative Conditions

The removal of multiple teeth involves more extensive surgery, and some conditions are expected:

  • Swelling and Bruising: You may experience swelling and even bruising around the eyes, which should peak after 48 hours. Moist warm towels can help with discoloration after the initial 36-hour ice application period.
  • Sore Throat: Swelling near the extraction sites may lead to throat discomfort. This typically subsides within 2-3 days.
  • Cracked Lips: If your mouth was stretched during surgery, keep your lips moisturized with Vaseline or another ointment to prevent cracking.
  • Mild Fever: A slight fever is normal for the first 24-48 hours. If your temperature continues to rise beyond this period, contact our office.

Denture Adjustments and Sore Spots

If you have immediate dentures, sore spots may develop. Your oral surgeon in Richardson, TX, will need to adjust the dentures within 24-48 hours of surgery to prevent these sore spots from worsening. Failure to do so may delay your healing.

If you have any concerns or complications during your recovery, don’t hesitate to call our office at 972-231-6661.
